Man on man, I went to JCrew the other day at the Woodburn Shopping center…on a Sunday…at about 2pm…in Mid August. What was I thinking!? Obviously not about it being Back To School time!
We battled hoards of mothers with little ones tied to them, strung from them, in tow and running away from them (and took us almost 45 minutes to get OUT of the parking lot for Pete’s sake!). Lesson well learned. I sat in my comfy robe last night, glass of wine in hand and clicked “purchase” on two items I neglected to pick up on my JCrew fix during the Back To School Chaos. My kinda shopping.
That made me think about a fun way to tie BTS (from here on out) into Design. I used to LOVE BTS time, that was when you got a new Jansport backpack to replace the one that you had doodled all over and had all your besties sign….and never let anyone touch the area that Hot Boy scribbled something intangible on it that you kept thinking it said “your cute”. Or you picked out your new Trapper Keeper- and if you were a girl back in the late 80’s and early 90’s then you probably made sure yours was a Lisa Frank dolphin scene or the like (BTW, I am a firm believer that she was on massive amounts of drugs while coming up with those scenes- verifiable via HERE) Then as we got older, it was all about what was hip in fashion, when your daily doubles for fall sports started and what classes you had with whom you had them.
Then came college… I should have known the first degree round that I wanted and NEEDED to be a Designer. My biggest fretting session wasn’t over my classes, my clothes or what hall my dorm was…it was how I was going to decorate my new, very own place (also shared with another gal, about 4’ wide and 10’ long…prison cells are larger). However, this was my. first. place. Lighting, duvet, art, rugs, clocks, pillows, and photos had to be painstakingly picked to make sure my room rocked. And it did from what I remember, although not to date myself that was a looong time ago. Like 1,3 decades ago!
Well, I’d like to take some time over the next few weeks and pay some homage to BTS time. Your first installment of BTS is brought to you by Geometry. The lines (yes, a circle still has a line) in these pieces are gorgeous. Also the brass and golds, but my old geometry drill sergeant would argue that those two elements aren’t a part of it….what ever.
All fixtures can be found at Dering Hall
